Do Intensive Driving Courses Work ?

A common question asked about intensive driving courses is whether they work or not.  We had a pupil of ours pass her driving test in Peterborough this morning, (well done Sophie!) on her first attempt, having taken out one of our Intensive Driving Courses 12 weeks previously!  The only reason for the delay was that her first driving test was cancelled due to poor weather conditions.

So how do we get them to be that effective?  We spend time to understand your previous driving experience, learning preferences, and special needs so that the correct course is recommended to you.  We have a choice between different courses with different hours of in-car training, over different periods of time.  If you find yourself being funnelled into a standard course, whereby there are no other choices, then that can have a serious impact on the outcomes.  If there are not enough hours of training, or the learning curve was too steep, or there was not enough time to deal with your particular concerns, then this may affect if you’re ready to take the driving test, it may affect the result of the test.  There is nothing quite like failing the driving test to knock your confidence.

So when you ask…. do intensive driving courses work, the answer is undoubtedly “Yes, they can”, but that is no guarantee that they will necessarily work for you and your needs.  As specialists in Intensive Driving Courses for over 5 years now in Peterborough, Grantham and surrounding areas, we ensure that every opportunity is given for you to properly prepare for the course.  That is after all what you are needing.  We have busy people attend our courses, often professionals, with tight schedules and they NEED results.  Customers have travelled to us from as far as London to attend our courses such is their popularity and our dependability.

How To Find Time For Driving Lessons

These are busy times for everyone.  Wondering how to find time for driving lessons can be tricky, this blog will give you some practical tips to think about.

If you are wanting to learn to drive, let's say as a complete beginner, then the DVSA have stated that on average it will take 40 odd hours of driving lessons with a Driving Instructor and 20 odd hours of driving lessons with friends/family.  At an hour a week, that would be coming on for 10 months worth of driving lessons, and it would probably be more realistic to add some more if you don't have the opportunity to practise with parents/friends in between lessons with a Driving Instructor.

It would also probably be wise to take into account events that crop up that are another drain on your time, and I am sure there will be many... school/college exams, holidays, special events, and work commitments. Things simply crop up, that will have more priority than your 1 hour driving lesson per week.  Not to mention of course, sudden illness, or an injury that prevents you from driving.  In the winter months we have less daylight hours of course, and whilst some night time driving practise is recommended, like everything in life, you will need to balance it.  As such, it is very easy for that 10 month period to realistically be a year.

The BIG TOM 5 day intensive driving course offers an alternative to deal with this problem of time.  In fact, if budget allows, it is normally possible to fit in any amount of hours over a given period so as to take into account your own learning preferences and time pressures in any given times of the week or month.  Customers from across the UK in London, St. Neots, Oakham, Huntingdon and Nottingham are making use of the flexible service offered by Big Tom Driving School in finding a solution that fits their needs.

Driving Lessons Spalding Space Around Your Car

Being aware of what is near your vehicle when on driving lessons in Spalding is really important.  There are plenty of places that crop up where maintaining the space around your car is very necessary.  Watch this video for some examples of being aware of space around your car on a driving lesson in Spalding.

Whether it be driving in the Town Centre, around St Thomas' Road or on the new by-pass, the principle remains the same - it is not something that is speed dependent.  Maintaining large spaces between your car and others is good as it reduces the need to quickly go on your brakes to react, and it provides a nice buffer of time in which you and others around you can respond safely.

When driving in slow moving traffic, not driving too close to the vehicle in front, when coming on to a roundabout not driving too close to the vehicle crossing you, when paused at a red traffic light, being aware of a cyclist or pedestrian really close to the car, when on a single carraigeway being aware of a motorbike wanting to overtake you, when overtaking on a motorway.  There are loads of examples of this very important principle, and applying it is a #gooddrivinghabit.  Check out my twitter feed "tukkr" for more of these lifetime good driving habits.

The key skill to develop on the BIG TOM intensive driving course in Spalding is to make yourself aware of what is around the car at important times, so that in the event of a potential hazard escalating, you as the driver, are aware of your responsibility to keep things safe.  The habit to develop on your course is identifying the times when mirror checks, and all round observations, are necessary and effective.  It takes time to develop this skill, and you are encouraged to practise it throughout your course.
